IB-DP: Your Path to Global Universities and Beyond

Elevate Your Future with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP)

Welcome to the Manchester International School's IB Diploma Programme (IB DP). Here, we invite you to explore the remarkable world of the IB DP, its innovative concepts and methodologies, global recognition, and the profound benefits it offers to our student community.

IB DP: Shaping Future Leaders with Excellence

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is a transformative educational journey that empowers students aged 16 to 19. It is designed to provide a comprehensive and challenging academic experience, preparing students with the skills and attitudes needed for success in higher education and their careers.

The DP Curriculum: A World of Knowledge and Inquiry

The DP curriculum is comprised of six subject groups and the DP core, which includes Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay. These elements combine to create a holistic and intellectually stimulating program.

They develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.
They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.
They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognise and approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions.
They understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.
They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.
They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are used to seeking and evaluating different points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.
They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.
They approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought, and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs.
They understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others.
They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and imitations in order to support their learning and personal development.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK):

In TOK, students reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we come to know what we claim to know. It encourages critical thinking and an exploration of different ways of knowing.

Extended Essay:

The extended essay is an independent, self-directed research project culminating in a 4,000-word paper. It fosters research skills and allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS):

CAS is a project-based component that encourages students to engage in creative, active, and service-oriented activities. It promotes personal growth, leadership, and community involvement.

Diverse Subject Groups: Nurturing Well-Rounded Scholars

The six subject groups within the DP curriculum offer a wide range of disciplines, catering to varied interests and career aspirations. These subject groups include:

  • Studies in Language and Literature
  • Language Acquisition
  • Individuals and Societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The Arts

Students have the flexibility to choose courses from these groups and may also opt for additional sciences, individuals and societies, or languages courses in place of an arts course. Courses are offered at both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL), with HL courses requiring a deeper level of knowledge, understanding, and skill.

IB-DP: Your Path to Global Universities and Beyond

The IB Diploma Programme is widely recognized by competitive universities worldwide for its academic rigor, meticulous evaluation, and the preparation it provides students for higher education and future careers. It is a distinguished qualification that opens doors to esteemed institutions and opportunities around the globe.

Who is the DP for?

The Diploma Programme is open to any student aged 16 to 19 at schools authorized to implement the program. It is designed for motivated students seeking a challenging and enriching educational experience.

Manchester International School - Empowering Minds, Enriching Futures

Choosing subjects in the
Diploma Programme

  • Students choose courses from the six subject groups; furthermore, they may opt to study an additional sciences, individuals and societies, or languages course, instead of a course in the arts.
  • Students will take some subjects at higher level (HL) and some at standard level (SL). HL and SL courses differ in scope but are calculated matching with the same grade descriptors, with students demanded to exhibit a better level of knowledge, understanding and skills at higher level.
  • Students must take at least three (but not more than four) subjects at higher level, and the remaining at standard level.
