Manchester International School - (IB PYP)
Professional Development workshops
Life is a continuum of learning and developing. Our staffs are regularly engaged in professional development activities. We constantly register our teachers to attend workshops and conferences. We also hire professionals and trained teachers whose expertise together with our commitment to collaboration and distributed leadership ensures that we continue to learn from one another and we remain updated with the latest trends in international education. In addition to staff sharing and teachers leading our own professional development, Manchester International School is committed to providing the very best educational consultants for our faculty. MIS teachers can expect to receive regular training throughout the year, provided either via in-house workshops facilitated by visiting educational experts or by attending workshops and conferences at regional events.
International Baccalaureate (IB) has three categories of workshop:
- Category 1, which focus on IB philosophy and implementation
- Category 2, which focus on delivery of the four IB programmes of education
- Category 3, for educators to build on and enhance their professional development portfolios
Depending on circumstances and experience, teachers are provided workshops in a particular category.
Workshops can be delivered in a number of ways, including face-to-face and online, both in-school or at district workshops, cluster workshops and regional conferences.
Category1 workshops: developing expertise in new IB educators
Category 1 workshops provide professional development and assistance for Educators who are new to a school with an existing IB programme, or those interested in joining an IB school, should also consider category 1 workshops.
Participants will learn about:
- the basic philosophy and curricular model of the programme
- programme standards and practices appropriate to the participants’ role
- the appropriate programme framework for their programme of choice.
Category 2 workshops: developing expertise in current IB educators
Category 2 workshops look at assessment, teaching and learning methodologies, and best practice in the classroom. They are for educators who have already been teaching their particular IB programme.
Participants will be expected to have a good understanding of their programme, as well as practical experience in assessment, so they can share good practices.
They will:
- make connections between programme frameworks and classroom practice
- enhance their understanding of assessment in IB programmes
- discuss and analyse standards and practices appropriate to their role
- engage in discussion and activities aimed at sharing pedagogical techniques.
Category 3 workshops: strengthening skills and sharing exceptional practice
Category 3 workshops vary in terms of audience. Some are for more experienced educators who want to enhance their professional development portfolios, while others are for all educators – those with and without a great deal of experience.
Participants will engage in detailed discussions on topics such as learning theory, pedagogy, assessment, and other scholarly interests.
These workshops also cover subject-specific content, administrative and pedagogical leadership, and subject-specific seminars on changes to the IB curriculum.
